ULTRATHIN s/t LP out now!

Montreal’s Ultrathin have been hammering out their distinct take on psychedelic punk for more than a few years now. A single, three tapes, a series of killer shows with bands like Red Mass, Soupcans and Tyvek; Ultrathin hasn’t been idle. But now, with their debut LP courtesy of Bruised Tongue, the ‘thin have finally broken the surface. Ultrathin is stepping towards the light, so to speak, and have dropped one of the year’s finest displays of frustrated punk and bad-acid psych.

Opener “White Walls” establishes the Ultrathin template – head-down rhythmic drive led by drummer Matthew Wilson as bassist Mark Fragua’s desperate vocals fight to be heard above Shaun Anderson’s corrosive guitar mangling. “Got A Feeling” focuses these elements into a blistering punk attack. “I Wanna Know” transitions effortlessly from mid-tempo burn to a ride off into the sunset, sparks trailing everywhere. I’m sure you can figure out what “Scum With A Badge” is about; ditto for “Sick of Living” which finds an echo on a savage cover of the Pagans’ “Real World.” “Whac-A-Mole” shows off Ultrathin’s snotty garage roots, which feels almost pleasant after the annihilating meltdown of “Out From the Cold.” In case you still had any doubts, “In My Mind” will erase them, closing out the album with a Spacemen 3-like intensity.

There are only 238 copies of this excellent LP out there, so don’t sleep on what is surely to be a hidden gem of this year of our Lord, 2014. – Erick Bradshaw

Heavy Chains S/T 7″

heavy_chains_promo

Those keeping track of the Vancouver underground over the past few years are no strangers to Heavy Chains.  2/3s of Nü Sensae & 1/4 of White Lung have come together to drag you through a Burning Hell of cough syrup sludge, brown notes, and feedback screams. An unofficial first-ever vinyl release from Bruised Tongue, and the first recorded output from Heavy Chains in nearly three years sees the band taking a much more aggro approach than we’re used to, heavily channeling the best of Japanese hardcore psychadelia on the A-side (including a GISM cover that seriously rivals the original) and digging even deeper, darker, and doomier on the flip.

Ottawans can pick up a copy from us personally this Friday. Available to the rest of the world after the weekend.

Limited to a one-time edition of 300 in risograph’d sleeves.

TAP(E) TAKEOVER + SOUPCANS/ULTRATHIN/THE YIPS!

This Friday at Mughshots! Pierre and Craig will be on the decks and hocking our wares in the prison. Soupcans, Ultrathin, and The Yips play after midnight. There will be tape deals (5-4-15) . Soupcans will have their new 7″. We will have brand new (hopefully) tie-dyed BT logo shirts. This will also be your first chance to pick up the first official Bruised Tongue vinyl release, Heavy Chains’ S/T 7″.

Thanks to Kichesippi and Support Local Month for hooking this up.

Weird Canada gives Bruised Tongue some love!

http://weirdcanada.com/2013/10/new-canadiana-roberta-bondar-hiss-ep/

From the eyedropper blues of Adam Bradley:

Straight-sampled Moondog opens the Hiss EP with a humble jangle of bells and found train-whistle sound before the calm is cracked sidelong by a sledge of garagey ’tude. An eyedropper’s worth of blues is swallowed up in a vat of steaming punk-rock pitch. Denim-shredding tones, dented rhythms and proto-Karen O vocals slap you square in the gob. Roberta Bondar are yet another jewel in the crown of Ottawa’s Bruised Tongue.

http://weirdcanada.com/2013/10/new-canadiana-organ-eyes-marine-tantrum/

From the mashed bangers of V. Rachel Weldon:

This prolific Ottawa songwriting duo have put out three full-length releases this year alone, with no signs of slowing down.Marine Tantrum’s title does well to reflect its fine balance of bangers and mash, but gets the chronology backwards. Out of the gate, “British Grafitti”, “Teenage Kingdomdom” and “Jesus Fish” throw fits like angry mall punx, before mellowing out later tracks like “Needle Beach” and “Tumble Dry” with submerged distortion, wavy falsetto and effortless indifference. Closer “Zola Saw”, which most closely resembles Multibody’s teen-dreamy vibration, is spacious and drawn-out, playing with pseudo-naïveté. Knowing and not knowing, it negotiates between youth and maturity, light and heavy, resolving nothing.

http://weirdcanada.com/2013/10/new-canadiana-ultrathin-minimum-payout/

From the downward spiral of Joni Sadler:

Montreal trio Ultrathin delve into otherworldly territory with this deeply psychedelic blast of fuzz-punk. Whether you prefer your jams fast and nihilistic or drawn out and spacey, these dudes have you covered. When they beckon you to “walk into the void,” it’s tough to ignore the call. Welcome to the next dimension.

MARSHSTEPPER (Tempe, AZ. Ascetic House. mem. of Destuction Unit)

http://marshstepper.ascetism.com/

“Marshstepper is more than a just band, they are a perfect extension of the Ascetic House collective that the members have built. In Marshstepper’s case, the band has pushed beyond simply playing music and create an eerie aura at live shows that includes performance, costume and a whole lot of fog.”
